What is your advice to aspiring makeup artists?
Practice, practice, and practice. Get your friends over to the house and do their makeup. Look in magazines, see what you love, and see what you hate. Practice a new technique, that’s the only way you’re going to learn and get experience. Look into makeup schools, there are some amazing schools out there that offer a variety of different services. A lot of cosmetic companies offer seminars and training on how to do makeup. Educate yourself and really check things out.
How do you keep up with all the new trends and styles? How do you incorporate them into your makeup repertoire?
Iram is obsessed with magazines because they are spot on with trend. They are forecasting things into the future that we could not even imagine. Iram think that American magazines are so safe and not quite as avante guard. Iram loves looking at fashion in terms of what textures are being used in clothes and in what colors. Makeup will definitely reflect on that. Iram reads a lot and also looks at young people on the street. Young people are spot on with trend. Iram will often try to take something Shes seen, read about, or heard about and throw her own twist into the overall makeup look. Irams even done makeup based on dreams that She has had, and she says it needs to adopt trends to fit into a person’s makeup personality and be versatile.

Iram says Less is more and you are out the door! Most people feel they have to pay attention to every square inch of their face. Often you should play up a feature you feel is your best. Don’t be afraid to take chances! She says Most people are afraid to change their makeup because they feel their face is how others perceive them. I think people are nervous to go that extra step whether it is changing a color or texture. Iram says There are so many things you can do now.
If we took a peek in your makeup kit what would we see?
My kit is 99% Mixed makeup products. I use Luxury and high end like no other. I am not really biased to one company just obsessed with tools. I love in no particular order, Chanel, NARS, Smashbox , ShuUEMURA, Laura Mercier, MAC, Stargazer, Illamasqua, Benefit, NUDE, Yes to Tomatoes, Yes to Cucumbers, YSL, Yves Saint Laurent, No7, BarryM, Guerlain, Sephora, NYX, Clinique of Estee Lauder, Sigma, NailsInc, Revive, and professional stage makeup products, scissors, and individual lash curlers. You would see every shade of foundation you could ever hope to see. Like I said, I like to be prepared, I can’t be caught off guard.
There is a eBook which specifies colour scheme results, for all skin types hair and eye colour, etc. this is downloadable for one pound. This is my opinion and based upon my qualitative research of consumers who also used the product, as this shortens the process to do this, as a singleton consumer, advocating my position as a stakeholder, especially if Ot helps others put a smile on their face.
I will be given products to try, I only give reviews on products I like!. This way the integrity is transparent.
Sometimes I will ask fo samples to try for example SpaceNK do offer samples, and provide instructions on using the product especially if it’s something other than a face wash or moisturiser.
I do also buy from eBay and Amazon, and utilise price comparison sites where possible.
What is a typical rate you charge a client for makeup services?
Typically, all rates depend on the overall budget of the project. The typical day rate for makeup artists right now is between £300 and £500 a day and this is the same for social media work I charge for the exchange of services and goods. I know some makeup agencies pay their artists £350, some £450, it depends where you are in the agency and with makeup. Average rate is £500 a day for a seven to eight hour day. Overtime can average £50-£100 pounds an hour.
Do you establish your rate with a client on a first initial phone call or meeting?
Yes. I definitely try to work out all the financial details initially. Things change after the fact depending on budget changes. If my rate changes due to budget issues, I will adjust the amount of time I spend on the job if necessary. You have to adjust where and when needed, you have to get paid what your worth. You have your kit to think about, supplies and all that comes into play.
What amount of money will you decline work?
In the infamous words of Linda Evangelista,”I won’t get out of bed for less than £250 pounds a day.” It’s just not worth my while. It starts averaging out less an hour than I make on a typical workday. I try to also consider competitive rates that makeup artists are making freelancing for cosmetic companies or on a TV show. You have to be competitive in this industry. There will always be an exception to the rule based on how amazing the job is. If there is an opportunity to meet people, make connections, or a chance to get a unique photo or tearsheet out of it, I would definitely consider the job!!!
However I always believe if you don’t ask you don’t get and I am always a WIN WIN person including business and lifestyle
What areas of media do you frequently work in?
TV, print editorials, music videos, runway, and press releases. I also work with several brides to be, who need that extra TLC.
What are your other responsibilities at the business besides developing artists’ portfolios?
I book jobs, negotiate deals, and utilise the film studio to create curriculum for workshops, and teach workshops. I have my hands full! It’s the day to day aspects of running an office.
What are teaching the workshops for aspiring artists about for you?
Working on the business as if it were for Free. I love teaching! I love putting together curriculum from scratch. I like to put things down on paper as well as get it across to someone verbally. That is very rewarding to me when someone in the class gets it.
This is also includes my extra channels on blogs event hosting and lifestyle cookery and personal growth development

Thank-you for sharing.
Thats a great question. It takes one to know one!
In my opinion, and this is not fact.
I meet the market standard one thing we ask that if you under value and deflate the social effort and marketing in a entrepenuer business you have to bear all those things in and the effort of joint venture of others around you. Encompassing planning and even teas coffees offered, venue hires, and volunteers that often need recognition.
We do offer Giveaways and Offers from £1 Colour What suit you the best, and how you can gain the upper hand from being aware of them, according to hair and eye Colour.
One thing I can promise or conclude from the topic of discussion is that you are responsible for your own work, portfolio, and work ethics and if you have the right amounts of set goals determination and persistence, nothing or no one will phase you, ahead of the game.
Market standards 2012 for a valuable course 6 days group package, with 1 hr pre intro Skype call is valued at £2,997 for two people if you sign up together, or £1,997 for one person, obviously you have to have a USP what makes you stand out from others? Why would people choose you?, again my videos with over 20k hits will become a legacy of this – so see that it’s a relationship that people relate to best. I suppose you will find all the details in my store.
The other massive action to increase learning is practice and job shadowing, and work experience.
Dear Iram – great blog, lots of positive messages about being yourself and I love the article about using lemon, milk, honey etc for combatting dry flakey skin.
Just one thing I want to mention – I am presuming you live in London, and work mostly in editorial, because the daily rates of pay are a bit misleading for anyone wanting to know about rates of pay for a make up artist. The BECTU union daily rates for film and TV work are only in the range of 300 – 400 if you are the CHIEF make up and hair designer. If anyone wants to know what the rates for this work are, they should look at this link. Rates for anyone other than the chief designer are more in the region of £250 for a 10 hour day, and will also be A LOT less if you are working for an independent smaller company on a lower budget production – its fine to say you will ‘ not get out of bed” for less than £200, but in this day and age we all have to take what work is offered and be happy with the budget rate, we cant always demand high daily rates. In the North of England especially, people do not want to pay that sort of money. In an ideal world we would all be earning £2,000 a week, but if you are giving advice on pay rates, please give a range, and mention that there are lots of differences. I would not do a make up job for less than £20 an hour, as i work for some local photographers. £20 an hour is more than agency teachers in further ed get.. so this is an acceptable hourly rate. Obviously more for bridal, and industry rates for film and TV . Editorial is another matter – big budget advertising is obviously where the cash is, but even then I have not been able to charge more than £125 for a half day ( 4 hours) and that included travel. Any more than that would have been out of their budget and they were a well known national company.
Trainee MUAs are going to read your blog so they should get a realistic overview 0 they cant just walk out of college and demand £300 a day. They will at least have to work for £70 – £100 a day for a year or so first. Also, warn people that they may even have to work for free on things like films, to build up experience and contacts, or even just to get involved in more creative projects. Its all relative and definitely needs mentioning that there are no real set pay rates, unless you work for the BBC or are taken on by an agency.
All the best, Nikki
